Velocity Profiling Sensors

Ultrasonic Velocity Profiling Sensors (Cross-Correlation)

Our range of ultrasonic velocity profiling sensors is based on a patented cross-correlation technology developed by the manufacturer Nivus. This technology allows the measurement of flow rates in open channels, full and unfilled pipes, with a high degree of accuracy, especially in comparison to the widely used Doppler technology.

This range includes several models to cover all needs depending of the specific features of the facilities to be equipped.

Different versions and shapes are available, depending on the model:

  • Wedge/hydrodynamic (sensors installed on a channel or pipe wall, or on channel bottom)
  • Cylindrical (sensors inserted into the pipe, flush with the surface, particularly useful for full pipes)
  • Tubular (sensors especially designed for installation in partially filled channels with perpendicular walls)

These sensors can be supplied with a level sensor integrated in the same housing or mounted separately.

They can be combined with NivuFlow 750 or 7550 transmitters to form a complete flow measurement system, either stand-alone or connected to an existing control system (SCADA, telemetry) for permanent installation or measurement campaigns.

Applications

  • Slightly to heavily-polluted fluids, in open channels or full or partially filled pipes
  • Sewer networks, Pumping stations
  • Wastewater treatment plants: inlet, outlet, aeration tank outlet, sludge recirculation, sludge treatment, fermenter outlet, flocculent dosages
  • Diagnosis, infiltration or capacity studies
  • Direct control of discharges, secondary water inflows and leakage flow monitoring
  • Overflow events monitoring
  • Stationary measures in rainfall retention structures such as stormwater, retention or pollution control basins
  • Industrial water networks
  • Metering to determine billing charges
  • Drainage pipes
  • Sludge recycling lines

Main benefits

  • High measurement accuracy thanks to cross-correlation velocity profiling technology
  • No calibration required
  • Self-adaptation to variations in velocity profiles and hydraulic disturbances
  • Visualization of 3D velocity profiles (see NivuFlow 750 and 7550 converters)
  • Flexibility to adapt to different needs (channel and pipe dimensions, full or partially filled pipes, required level of accuracy, etc.)
  • Multi-sensor capability for very large pipes or channels, or for system redundancy
  • Can be installed without stopping the flow, without intervention in the environment, and without additional mounting equipment such as spring rings or mounting plates (insertion cylindrical sensors)
  • Absolute zero-point stability (no drift)
  • Insensitive to interference over long distances thanks to digital signal transmission
